OCR: FIRST OBSERVATIONS THE CANALS OF MARS OBSERVATIONS In short, there are no artificial canals on Mars-but some of OF SPACE PROBES the "canals" identified by Lowell and his followers are, in fact, valleys or canyons. For example, a canal Lowell called Agathodaemon is a huge canyon now called Valles Marineris. Lowell's Styx canal is actually a mountain range, the Phlegra Montes, while the Ceraunius canal is a large valley currently known as Ceraunius Fossae. The Cerberus canal identified by Antoniadi, one of Lowell's supporters, is really a strip of land covered with a thick layer of dust that reduces its reflective property, so it appears darker than the surrounding landscape. But such correspondences between Lowell's theory and the reality of Mars are exceptions to the rule. However, a series of natural "canals" has been identified on the Red Planet, but none are straight like those Lowell imagined. These formations are divided into four categories: . Large channels whose width exceeds 100 kilometers, including vast canyons such as the Valles Marineris, that are much larger than the Grand Canyon in the United States. MARS BETAT
